Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA – Is Coconut Oil Healthy?

Coconut Oil In this weeks video health tip, Dr. Samir Hajariwala, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at whether coconut oil is healthy or not.

72% of North Americans believe coconut oil to be a healthy oil, yet studies question just how healthy it actually is.

Does coconut oil promote weight loss, lower blood sugar levels or decrease harmful inflammation?

Coconut oil has been sold as a healthy fat, citing studies of people in societies, with little to no heart disease, that eat a lot of coconut oil.

What we are not being told is the diet these people eat is void of mammal meat, processed meats, and sugar-added processed foods; and that the coconut oil is from fresh coconut flesh, not commercially processed coconut oil.

A review of 17 studies involving over 700 participants concluded that coconut oil increased blood levels of the harmful LDL cholesterol more than soybean, olive, safflower, canola, or palm oils.

Over 90% of the fat in coconut oil is saturated fat, which raises the bad LDL cholesterol and is associated with increased risk for heart attacks.

If you choose to cook with oil, choose an oil with a high smoke point, like avocado, sunflower seed, or peanut oil.

Ultimately, no matter which oils you choose, they should be a very small part (no more than a few tablespoons a day) of your overall diet.

Preventing heart attacks involves eating a healthy diet of a wide variety of plants, and restricting mammal meat, processed meats, fried foods, sugar-added foods, and all sugared drinks including fruit juices.

Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA – Did you know there is a way to exercise your heart?

heart exerciseIn this weeks video health tip, Dr. Samir Hajariwala, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at how your skeletal muscles make your heart stronger.

Over 25% of North Americans over the age of 65 suffer from severe loss of skeletal muscle (sarcopenia), which significantly limits their daily activity.

Inactivity causes loss of skeletal muscles leading to loss of heart muscle.

When your heart becomes too weak to pump blood to your brain, you die.

A study of 900 heart failure patients found that lack of exercise put them at twice the risk of death within three years.

By strengthening your skeletal muscles through a regular exercise program you also strengthen your heart muscles.

Here are some exercises that are great for your skeletal muscles and heart muscles:

1. Resistance Training:  Building muscles in your body is also good for your heart.  Free weights, weight machines, resistance bands, push-ups, squats, and pull-ups all help you build muscle and contribute to heart health.

2. Interval Training: Interval training, alternating between short bursts of high-intensity exercise with longer periods of active recovery, raises and lowers your heart rate, which helps improve the function of your blood vessels.

For best results, it is recommended you spend a minimum of around 20 minutes a day doing moderate exercise per week.

A healthy lifestyle should include daily exercise and a diet rich in organic fruits, vegetables and whole grains and regular chiropractic care.

Remember you and your family can be as healthy as can be, and it’s never too soon to start receiving chiropractic care. Your best source for everything health is your chiropractor.  It’s never too early or late to see the team at Crossroads Chiropractic. Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA – Should You Wear a Mask When Exercising?

wear a mask when exercisingIn this weeks video health tip, Dr. Samir Hajariwala, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at whether or not you should wear a mask when exercising.

Wearing a mask helps protect others when you cough, sneeze, talk loudly or breathe hard, but they may not protect you.

Viruses were shown to pass through cloth masks 97% of the time, compared to the special medical masks at only 44% of the time.

High levels of viruses in the air have been shown to accumulate indoors in closed spaces, while at a much lower level outdoors due to air circulation.

When exercising in a gym or indoor space, wearing a mask is an essential courtesy to other people who are using the facility.

It is also important to use sanitizing wipes to clean the equipment before and after each use.

Wearing masks when you exercise outdoors can limit your ability to breathe, especially if you are doing vigorous exercise like running or cycling.

If you are running or riding with other people, it is wise to space yourselves 10 feet or more.

Viruses can accumulate on your mask, so make sure you wash it after each use.

Social distancing of at least 6 feet is recommended when exercising indoors or outdoors.

If you are moving fast and breathing hard, a distance greater than six feet is necessary due to the slipstream of virus-carrying droplets from your breath, which can extend for 10 feet.

A nutritious diet, regular exercise, quality sleep, a positive attitude and regular chiropractic care will aid in keeping your immune system functioning optimally.

Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA – A Healthy Lifestyle To Prevent Cancer

Preventing CancerIn this weeks video health tip, Dr. Samir Hajariwala, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at healthy lifestyle recommendations to prevent cancer.

According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, approximately 70% of adults 20 years or older are overweight or obese.

Being overweight has been shown to increase your cancer risk as well as your risk for many other health problems.

The American Cancer Society has recently published lifestyle guidelines for preventing cancer recommending:

Exercise regularly: Adults should engage weekly in 20 to 40 minutes a day of moderate-intensity physical activity, 10 to 20 minutes day of vigorous-intensity physical activity, or an equivalent combination; exceeding the upper limit of 40 minutes a day is optimal.

A review of 18 articles on exercise predicting cancer survival, found 10 articles documenting sedentary behavior contributing to an increased recurrence rate in cancer survivors.

Eat a healthy diet: Eat a variety of vegetables including dark green, red, and orange, fiber-rich legumes (beans and peas), and others; fruits, especially whole fruits; and whole grains.

Restrict or avoid red meat and processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages, highly processed foods, and refined grain products.

Limit Alcohol: It is best not to drink alcohol.

Seeing your chiropractor regularly keeps the spine healthy, which then allows the nervous system and immune system to work optimally.

According to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, chiropractic care as a complimentary health service during cancer treatments can also help with some of the side affects such as nausea, headaches, fatigue and back & neck pain.

You can reduce your risk for many cancers by maintaining a healthy weight, daily exercise, and eating lots of vegetables, fruits, and other anti-inflammatory foods, and regular chiropractic care.

Remember you and your family can be as healthy as can be, and it’s never too soon to start receiving chiropractic care. Your best source for everything health is your chiropractor.  It’s never too early or late to see the team at Crossroads Chiropractic. Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA – Can Red Meat Cause Fatty Liver & Diabetes?

fatty liverIn this weeks video health tip, Dr. Samir Hajariwala, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at the link between eating meats cooked for a long time at high temperatures and diabetes.

In a recent article in The Journal of Hepatology, the authors revealed evidence associating the consumption of red or processed meat with excess fat in the liver that can cause high blood sugar levels.

It was not the cholesterol or saturated fat in mammal meat that linked meat to diabetes; but the heterocyclic amines (HCAs) formed when the meat was cooked for a long time at high temperatures.

A similar study showed red meat, chicken or fish cooked in an open flame or at a high temperature without water also increased the risk of diabetes.

When cooking with water, the sugar in foods combines with water to form harmless byproducts.

Cooking without water causes the sugars in meats to combine with proteins to form harmful HCAs and PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons).

By limiting animal proteins browned and charred, grilled, broiled, and fried, and eating lots of raw organic vegetables and fruits, whole grains and beans you will be paving the way for a longer, happier and healthier life.

sleepIn this weeks video health tip, Dr. Samir Hajariwala, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at how sleep affects your immune system.

Sleep plays an important role in your overall health, and not getting enough of it can negatively affect your immune system.

Lack of sleep causes your body to be more susceptible to infections and inflammation.

Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA – Faster Recovery From Low Back Pain

low back painIn this weeks video health tip, Dr. Matthew Davis, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at chiropractic care for faster recovery from low back pain.

The World Health Organization estimates nearly 70% of all adults living in industrialized countries will experience low back pain at some point in their lives.

Low back pain has become one of the leading causes of work absenteeism and limited activity around the world.

Research now supports chiropractic care can promote faster recovery from injuries, such as low back pain, commonly found in the world of sports.

An article published in Sports Health, stated that spinal manipulation therapy is one of the “most strongly supported evidence-based therapies” along with superficial heat for injury recovery in athletes experiencing back pain.

A study comparing pain and disability perception of patients experiencing low-back pain found that after eight weeks, the group receiving chiropractic reported a 5.5-point greater improvement in their Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire than those seen at the pain clinic, as well as less pain during injury recovery.

Chiropractic care is a great way to manage and relieve pain caused by low back pain. If you suffer from low back pain, regular chiropractic care offers an effective, safe, non-invasive, and non-addictive alternative to prescription medications or over-the-counter pain medications.

Remember you and your family can be as healthy as can be, and it’s never too soon to start receiving chiropractic care. Your best source for everything health is your chiropractor.  It’s never too early or late to see the team at Crossroads Chiropractic. Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA – Are Cleaning Products Killing You?

Cleaning productsIn this weeks video health tip, Dr. Samir Hajariwala, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at how home cleaning products may be killing us.

People have been disinfecting every surface in their homes since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a COVID-19 pandemic on March 11, 2020.

A 16% to 20% increase in calls to poison control centers has been reported due to exposure to cleaning solutions people are using to disinfect.

One of the biggest culprits are people mixing over the counter cleaning products they are using.

Mixing chemicals can cause a reaction that produces dangerous and even fatal fumes.

If you are looking to thoroughly disinfect a surface you need to begin with a clean surface.

Soap and water prove to be the best options for cleaning up dirt and grime.

Soap also inactivates viruses.

Here are 3 solutions that effectively disinfects surfaces.

Alcohol-based disinfectants contain either ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol at different levels of strength. Alcohol kills bacteria and also addresses fungi and viruses at concentrations above 60%.

Chlorine bleach kills bacteria, viruses, and fungi, but is also known to irritate your mucous membranes and form deadly gases when exposed to heat or light. Bleach also requires 10 to 60 minutes of contact to disinfect surfaces.

Hydrogen peroxide, at concentrations of 1% to 7.5%, as opposed to bleach, doesn’t produce any dangerous compounds. A better alternative is accelerated hydrogen peroxide (AHP), which works faster at killing viruses.

Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces are meant to help reduce the spread of viral and bacterial infections. Another way to reduce your potential for infection is to protect your immune system.

Keep your immune system functioning optimally with a nutritious diet, regular exercise, quality sleep, a positive attitude, and regular chiropractic care.
