Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine to the side. Cool fact, the word scoliosis is derived from the Greek term meaning curvature. The cause of scoliosis is often unknown, yet it can still be helped. Another cool fact, the term for unknown cause is idiopathic. Scoliosis often develops or worsens among children, among females when the spine has become weakened due to osteoporosis or when the spinal subluxations are left uncorrected.
A subluxation or pinched nerve is a condition in which a spinal nerve has reduced communication as it exits along the spine. Nerves which branch off on the spinal cord no longer properly work. Nerves emerge from the spine, connecting the brain to the rest of the body. If the spine has pinched nerves, then nerves lose ability to fully function, therefore so does the body.
Scoliosis of any one spinal area requires help for the entire spine because the spine is connected. When one area is compromised, often times the adjacent area tends to compensate by moving the opposite way. The spine compensate in its attempt to keep the body centered. Without compensation, you would fall over. Imagine your cervical spine that’s curved to the right. This causes your adjacent thoracic (mid-back) spine to curve to the opposite side
Conditions can develop from scoliosis include these and many others, back pain, knee and foot problems, hunched posture, asthma, digestive issues, inability to participate in sports, and lowered body image.
Helping to alleviate scoliosis requires the physical adjustment of the spine by a chiropractor to remove subluxation and restore balance. A back brace may possibly be avoided. The key, the younger someone is to maintain a healthy spine through chiropractic adjustments, the less likely they are to develop scoliosis.
