Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA - Is Coconut Oil Healthy?

Coconut Oil In this weeks video health tip, Dr. Samir Hajariwala, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at whether coconut oil is healthy or not.

72% of North Americans believe coconut oil to be a healthy oil, yet studies question just how healthy it actually is.

Does coconut oil promote weight loss, lower blood sugar levels or decrease harmful inflammation?

Coconut oil has been sold as a healthy fat, citing studies of people in societies, with little to no heart disease, that eat a lot of coconut oil.

What we are not being told is the diet these people eat is void of mammal meat, processed meats, and sugar-added processed foods; and that the coconut oil is from fresh coconut flesh, not commercially processed coconut oil.

A review of 17 studies involving over 700 participants concluded that coconut oil increased blood levels of the harmful LDL cholesterol more than soybean, olive, safflower, canola, or palm oils.

Over 90% of the fat in coconut oil is saturated fat, which raises the bad LDL cholesterol and is associated with increased risk for heart attacks.

If you choose to cook with oil, choose an oil with a high smoke point, like avocado, sunflower seed, or peanut oil.

Ultimately, no matter which oils you choose, they should be a very small part (no more than a few tablespoons a day) of your overall diet.

Preventing heart attacks involves eating a healthy diet of a wide variety of plants, and restricting mammal meat, processed meats, fried foods, sugar-added foods, and all sugared drinks including fruit juices.
