Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA – Should You Take Probiotics?

probiotics

In this weeks video health tip, Dr. Matthew Davis, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at probiotics and if you should be taking them.

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that can live in your body and help to keep you healthy.

Probiotics have many healthful benefits including: helping digest food, regulating inflammation, limiting the number of disease-causing microbes living in your body and making vitamins.

Probiotics are available in live-culture fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, buttermilk, kombucha, tempeh, miso, kimchi, sauerkraut, some pickles, and some fermented cheeses.

Probiotics are also found in over-the-counter pills claiming to contain live bacteria that will improve your health.

Many scientists have concerns that taking over-the-counter probiotic pills can mutate into bacteria that have harmful properties.

They also believe the bacteria in pills often disappear from the intestines soon after you stop taking the pills.

Should you be taking probiotics?

A review of 45 studies published over the last 27 years found that in healthy people, the use of probiotic supplements can:
• lead to an increase in these healthful bacteria growing in your colon,
• reduce belly discomfort caused by irregular bowel movements and constipation,
• improve some immune system responses, stool consistency, bowel movements, and the concentration of healthful bacteria in the colon and vagina.

It is important to know these healthful benefits are only temporary as the bacteria in the probiotics stop growing in the colon or vagina soon after you stop taking the probiotic product.

Permanent changes to a more healthy colony of gut bacteria occurs only when you make permanent changes to your diet.

And some of the best foods to grow a colony of healthful colon bacteria include: organic fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds.

Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA – Toxic Fungus in E-Cigs

toxic fungus

In this weeks video health tip, Dr. Matthew Davis, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at the health risks associated with e-cigarette use or vaping due to toxic fungus.

The rise in e-cigarette use or vaping has overshadowed tobacco use in teens today.

Data from the 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey by the CDC confirmed 3.6 million middle and high school students currently vape, an increase of 1.5 million in one year.

In 2018, the San Francisco-based Juul Labs overtook the U.S. e-cigarette market with a sales increase of nearly 800%.

The rising popularity of Juul products may be the result of the highly addictive nature of Juul’s nicotine salts.

One of the most popular reason for teens choosing Juul is their assortment of fruity flavors.

A recent study found 27% of the 75 single-use and refillable vaping cartridges tested contain microbial agents and 81% contain glucan, a substance found in the cell walls of most fungi.

Researchers also found endotoxin concentrations were higher in the fruit flavored products, which may suggest raw materials used in production have been the source of contamination.

These impurities are associated with asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease, reduced lung function and inflammation.

The secret to quitting smoking is to get healthy through diet and exercise first.

And…If you are a parent, talk with your children about the risks of smoking smokeless tobacco and e-cigarettes.

Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA – Children and Liver Disease

fatty liver diseaseIn this weeks video health tip, Dr. Matthew Davis, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at the reasons why young children are getting fatty liver disease.

Before 2006, it was foreign to believe children were experiencing fatty liver disease; however,  a new study discovered high fructose corn syrup sweetened beverages were being passed through breast milk, potentially predisposing infants to a fatty liver and obesity.

Fatty liver disease is caused by excess fat in your liver. There are two main types of fatty liver disease: nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease affects nearly 25% globally and is often a silent disease, since most are unaware of the condition and have few or no symptoms.

Current research and past studies continue to demonstrate early exposure to sugar and fructose often contributes to obesity, diabetes and fatty liver disease since fructose enhances the body’s capacity to store fat.

The best ways to support your liver health is by maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, limiting medications, managing your blood pressure and improving your insulin sensitivity.

Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA – Aspartame Equals Serious Health Concerns

aspartame

In this weeks video health tip, Dr. Matthew Davis, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at the serious health risks linked to the artificial sweetener, aspartame.

Aspartame is  found in more than 6,000 products…that’s right, more than 6,000 products. From things like diet soda and sugar-free gum to even children’s medicines and sugar free ketchup.

But what is aspartame?

Aspartame is a synthetic chemical which breaks down into methanol, and converts into formaldehyde when consumed. Formaldehyde! Would you give you children a glass of formaldehyde? I don’t think so. So, why would you let them have Aspartame?

Some of the health risks linked to aspartame include:
Cancer: A cancer researcher from Italy found that even in low doses, animals were developing several different forms of cancer when fed aspartame.

Heart Disease: The 2017 Canadian Medical Association Journal study found artificial sweeteners like aspartame are associated with a higher incidence of cardiovascular events and hypertension.

Dementia and Stroke: Drinking diet soda daily has been shown to put you at a three time greater risk of stroke and dementia.

If you are tempted to reach for a diet soda or other artificially sweetened products, fight the urge with natural healthy options like water with lemon or lime juice, or a fresh piece of fruit to help reduce cravings for sweets.

Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA – 3 Ways to Improve Your Gut Microbiome

gut bacteria

In this weeks video health tip, Dr. Matthew Davis, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at 3 things you can do to improve your gut health.

The fact is, your gut health is important to your overall health.

More than two thirds of your immune system is found within your gut. This is where microbiome, or your body’s healthy bacteria are found and function to help your body with many functions such as digesting your food, the ability to think clearly and even maintaining a healthy weight.

Your microbiome is found in your gut and other openings of your body such as your mouth, your genitals, and your nose.

When your gut microbiome is balanced, you stay healthy, and are in a good mood and have a lot of energy.

When your gut bacteria or microbiome is out of balance, you experience health issues, weight gain, diabetes, brain fog, and cancer.

The great news is that you have the opportunity to change your gut microbiome because these particular bacteria only have a lifespan of 20 minutes.

So you have the opportunity every time you eat to begin to change the population of your gut microbiome.

Here are 3 things you can do today to improve your gut bacteria or microbiome:

1. Eat the Right Foods.
Remove the sugar and processed foods from your diet.
Get your carbohydrates from vegetables and low-sugar fruits.
Include fermented foods in your diet like sauerkraut, pickles,
kimchi, kefir, non-processed yogurt, and kombucha.

2. Take a High-Quality Probiotic.
Probiotics help maintain your gut’s ecosystem

3. Stay Calm.
If your microbiome is out of balance, you may feel anxious, depressed, or tired.

The key is to keep supporting your microbiome with healthy food and lifestyle choices.

Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA – Severe Stress May Increase Risks For Autoimmune Disease

autoimmune diseasesIn this weeks video health tip, Dr. Matthew Davis, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, in honor Stress Awareness Month we are looking at how severe stress increases the risk for autoimmune diseases.

Your body’s immune system is your natural defense protection from disease and infection.

Autoimmune diseases turn your body’s defense system against itself by attacking healthy cells.

Researchers found stress to be linked with a 36% greater risk of developing 41 autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, Crohn’s disease and celiac disease.

It is also important to look at the impact stress has on lifestyle.

People who have been through severely stressful circumstances may be more likely to smoke, get less sleep or have increased drug and/or alcohol use – all being linked to an increased risk of certain autoimmune diseases.

Here are some proactive steps you can take to reduce the impact stress has on your immune system:
~Eat a diet high in antioxidant-rich foods like fruit, vegetables, dark chocolate, and green tea.

Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA – Chiropractic Care Lessens Depression

depressionIn this weeks video health tip, Dr. Matthew Davis, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at how chiropractic care can lessen depression.

According to The Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), millions and millions of people are affected by depression.

Apparently there is a strong correlation between pain and depression.

For many people, depression causes unexplained physical symptoms such as back pain or headaches.

Sometimes pain and depression create a vicious cycle in which pain worsens symptoms of depression, and then the ensuing depression worsens the pain.

Chiropractic care has been shown to decrease a number of pain syndromes by restoring function and removing pinched nerves that interfere with the nervous and immune system. By decreasing pain and restoring health there is often a decrease in depression.

Here are some reasons why chiropractic adjustments might lesson your depression.

1. Chronic pain negatively effects your mood and overall mental health. Studies show that people living with chronic pain are three to four times more likely to become depressed than those not in pain.

Chiropractic spinal adjustments create proper alignment where pain can be improved and depression alleviated.

2. Your nervous  system controls your mental and emotional health.

Chiropractic adjustments improve the nervous system by correcting misalignments and  allowing for better blood flow.

3. Stress and depression are connected.

A study in the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research found over 75% of patients who underwent chiropractic care reported positive changes to stress and increased life enjoyment while they were receiving chiropractic care.

If you or a family member are suffering from pain and depression,  chiropractic adjustments can help you to restore mobility, alleviate physical pain and positively impact your quality of life.
